Niagara College announces $50 million campus redevelopment project

Oct 23, 2008

Niagara College announced an ambitious $50 million campus redevelopment plan today that includes significant improvements and additions to its Welland Campus, and the construction of a Wine Education Centre at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus.

The comprehensive campus redevelopment project is designed to increase capacity in programs that serve key industries in Niagara, including skilled trades, technology, winery and viticulture and hospitality and tourism, while providing much-needed improvements to aging facilities.

“Niagara College is a catalyst in the transitioning of Niagara’s economy. Our campus plans and investments are designed to help our region meet the challenges that come with a changing economy and an urgent need for highly skilled workers,” said Niagara College President Dan Patterson.

The project is also a response to the College’s unprecedented growth, including a 10.1 percent increase in total enrolment for the Fall 2008 term – the largest increase among all Ontario colleges.

The capital project will create more than 1,000 postsecondary student spaces, and provide additional capacity for access training, academic upgrading and apprentice programs that provide opportunity for re-training and address skills shortages. Completion of the project is scheduled for the fall of 2010.

New additions to the Welland Campus will include:
• An Academic Wing with two 140-seat lecture theatres, lecture rooms, classrooms and labs;
• A Library and Learning Commons with an internal courtyard;
• A two-storey Athletics Centre with a double varsity-sized gymnasium, expanded fitness centres and a “green roof”;
• A Student Centre that includes a two-storey great hall, alumni lounge, bar and food-service facility, and offices.
• A significant expansion of the state of the art Technology Skills Centre
• Conversion of the existing student centre to a new visual arts/design centre

The Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus will see the construction of a new Wine Education Centre that will integrate academic programming, facilities for the unique Niagara College Teaching Winery and an educational centre for students, industry and visitors. The Niagara Culinary Institute will also be expanded.

The plan has already drawn the support of the Province of Ontario, which has invested $16.9 million in the project. Over the past decade, through sound financial planning, the College has established reserves that will cover approximately another one-third of the project cost. The College will look to the community, including regional and municipal governments, business, organizations and individuals to invest in this significant project.

“Niagara College is an economic success story in Niagara and our Campus Master Plan project is an exciting investment in Niagara’s future,” said Patterson, “We look forward to support from all areas of our community to make it happen.”

Further information on the project is available online at http://www.niagaracollege.ca/masterplan.

With 7,500 full-time students, Niagara College offers more than 90 diploma and advanced level programs at campuses in Welland, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Niagara Falls and St. Catharines. Areas of specialization include hospitality and tourism, technology and community safety. Update from Dan Patterson: Convocation, Construction, and Climate Surveys!

Oct 22, 2008

As we prepare for our annual Fall Convocation ceremony on Thursday – where more than 550 students will graduate – I’d like to update you on the many activities and news items here at Niagara College. There is incredible excitement and activity around our campuses, and I cannot recall a time when more was happening throughout the College.

Fall 2008 has been a record-breaker with more students enrolled here than at any time in our 41-year history. Total enrolment is up more than 10 percent over last year – the largest increase of any College in Ontario. My congratulations and thanks to all of you for the great work in meeting and exceeding the needs of our largest-ever cohort of students. With such a large enrolment increase, bumps are to be expected. Your ability to keep things moving smoothly is greatly appreciated, and is a reminder of why we’re the number one college in student satisfaction.

To keep pace with our growth, construction has already begun on the first phases of our Master Plan for campus re-development. For those at the Welland Campus, the initial expansion of the Skills Centre is well underway, and construction of the new perimeter road has begun. At the NOTL campus, which actually opened exactly 10 years ago today, the construction trailer is now in place at the base of the vineyards, signalling the imminent start of construction for the new Wine Education Centre. Today, we will publicly announce the full details of the Master Plan, of which you had an advance viewing at Niagara Day. This is great news for Niagara College and the Niagara region. Updates on this exciting project will be posted on our website as we move forward.

With all the new and ongoing activity throughout the College, it’s always good to get a solid understanding of how we are doing as a team. Beginning Monday and continuing through to Friday November 7, all faculty and staff are invited to complete the latest on-line Climate Survey. Your participation is greatly appreciated as the more staff completing the survey, the better the information.

For those who were with us in 2006, this survey will be very similar. If you have joined us since then, this is your opportunity to provide your feedback to help build and improve Niagara College. Our last climate survey provided valuable feedback. The results showed what we were doing well, and where to focus our efforts for improvement. The results and ensuing organization-wide dialogue led to many important initiatives aimed at strengthening our team. The upcoming climate survey is equally important – it will tell us how far we’ve come since 2006 and gauge the effectiveness of the work we’ve done since the last survey. Remember, your responses are confidential, and surveys are completed and submitted to an outside party in complete confidence. The college will not have access to the raw data or any report that will enable us to identify an individual. Full details, including Q&A’s, will be posted on Blackboard for all staff. Also, don’t hesitate to ask your supervisor or manager if you have any questions. Prizes are available for participants, including early bird submissions.

Finally, for those of you who are already making plans for the upcoming holiday season, I am pleased to inform you that the holiday period beginning December 25th has been extended by 1 day this year to include January 2, 2009. For those of you who need to enter the College prior to January 5, 2009, the College will be open on January 3rd and January 4th under normal weekend hours of operations.

As always, never hesitate to provide your thoughts and suggestions for improvement here at Niagara College. Feel free to contact me or any of the VP’s at any time, and I look forward to seeing many of you on Thursday at Convocation. Have a great day!

Sincerely,
Dan

Campus Safety/Emergency Response Update – Steve Hudson, VP Corporate Services

Oct 10, 2008

I would like to take this opportunity to provide an update on the numerous safety and security initiatives the College has undertaken over the last year.

The safety and security of our students and staff is a top priority at Niagara, and the College has committed significant resources – both financial and human – to develop and implement practices and infrastructure improvements that will enhance our ability to respond to crises and emergencies. In all, we have invested more than $700,000 in safety and security upgrades and initiatives over the past year.

Last year, I assembled a committee that conducted a review of existing security and emergency measures, and engaged the services of a consultant, who performed a detailed threat and risk assessment. The process resulted in a number of recommendations, on which we’ve made significant progress over the past six months:

  • Emergency Response Guides: Last fall the College developed and distributed a comprehensive desktop Emergency Response Reference Guide. Over the past year, updates have been distributed for this valuable tool.
  • Installation of security cameras: The majority of security cameras have been installed, and training will commence at the end of October.
  • PA System upgrades: A number of improvements have been made to the PA systems at the Welland and Niagara-on-the-Lake Campuses. In Welland, speakers have been added to improve sound quality in the hallways, coverage of the Voyageur Wing has been expanded and the residence has been added to the system. Also, a system has been put in place that cuts the music in After Hours during announcements. At the NL Campus, the system has been expanded to cover the entire main building, as well as the barn, greenhouse and residence. The system has been enhanced in the gymnasium, student pub, cafeteria and library. The PA system at NL has now been integrated into the phone system. The upgraded systems at both campuses are currently in use.
  • Installation of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phones: Installation of wiring and phones in most classrooms is complete, and phone programming and additional equipment installation will take place over the next month. The phones will be live in mid-to-late November.
  • On-campus LCD screens: Modifications have been made to the LCD screen systems at the Welland and NL Campuses to allow the screen to be used to display important information during emergencies.
  • Development of specific Shelter-in-Place/Evacuation procedure: The procedure was developed and approved last spring.
  • Shelter-in-Place/Evacuation training for all staff: Five sessions took place in spring 2008.
    Emergency preparedness tabletop exercises: “Tabletop” exercises are being developed with the Niagara Regional Police Service (NPRS) to review coordinated responses to scenarios that include emergencies and pandemic situations.
  • NRPS SPEAR program: Niagara College is a partner is the NRPS’s School Police Emergency Action Response (SPEAR) project, which includes the development of a software application that provides police and other emergency responders with important information and data on specific school buildings in emergency situations.
  • Professional development: Key safety and security staff have attended, and will attend, a wide range of conferences, seminars and other learning opportunities, including an active shooter mock exercise, provincial College meetings on security enhancement, sessions on terrorist activity, follow-up presentations by Dawson College and Virginia Tech security personnel, and the Ontario Association of Colleges and Universities Security Administrators Conference.

Our significant campus redevelopment plan has also created a unique opportunity to incorporate important security upgrades and infrastructure that will enhance campus safety.

I would like to thank all staff who have been involved in our ongoing efforts to enhance security and emergency response at Niagara College. If you have questions about the College’s campus safety initiatives, please feel free to contact me at ext. 7350.
