Many Hands project accepting applications

Jun 24, 2009

The Many Hands committee is currently accepting applications for its 13th annual project to take place in 2010.

Led by Niagara College Event Management post-graduate students, the Many Hands project will provide a one-day renovation blitz for a local charitable organization. The project will also include students in Niagara College’s construction programs.

This past year the students, along with more than 80 community volunteers, renovated the Welland Hope Centre’s Sprouting Hope Garden.

As in years past, students will plan all aspects of the project, which will take place in April, 2010. The ongoing success of the Many Hands project has been due in large part to the support of Canadian Tire Financial Services, the project’s founding sponsor.

Applications are now being accepted from local not-for-profit community organizations for the 2010 Many Hands Project. The deadline for applications is Friday, July 24, 2009.

Eligible agencies must be a not-for-profit organization involved in the provision of a community-based service in the Niagara Region and be willing to commit agency resources to the project. Selection of the project will be determined through the Many Hands Project Advisory Committee.

For more information on the Many Hands Project, or to download an application form, visit www.niagaracollege.ca/manyhands.

Professor, environmental club, win regional award

Jun 12, 2009

Niagara College’s Niagara Environmental Corps (NEC), and professor Martin Smith, were honoured last night at the 20th annual Niagara Regional Environmental Awards in Thorold.

The awards recognize individuals, businesses, community groups, youth and schools in the community for taking significant steps to protect our environment, from recycling and conserving energy and water, to preserving our natural areas.

The student-led NEC and Smith received the Volunteer Award in recognition of their contribution to a cleaner, greener Niagara.

“The idea behind the Niagara Environmental Corps is to empower our students to become proactive in solving environmental problems and building healthy communities,” said Smith, who formed the group in 2006. “It provides an opportunity for our students to make a difference.”

In 2007, the NEC joined with the College’s Niagara Research department to gain experience in environmentally-focused applied research initiatives that focus on protecting and restoring natural environments, including habitat restoration and monitoring, ecosystem restoration, site remediation, wetland conservation and solutions towards urban sustainability.

The NEC has grown to include more than 135 members, and has collaborated with local high schools to develop an NEC Junior Corps and has earned local and provincial recognition, including the 2008 Colleges Ontario Innovation Award.

Business Accounting student to receive Governor-General’s Academic Medal

Jun 4, 2009

This year’s recipient of the prestigious Governor-General’s Academic Medal is Jason Winnington of St. Catharines. Graduating from Niagara College’s Business Accounting Co-op program, Winnington completed his studies with a 97.3 per cent academic average.

Winnington began his studies at Niagara College in 2006 after working as a manager for a major Canadian grocery chain. He is currently working as an accountant for a local municipality, and aspires to take on a senior financial role with a major corporation or municipality.

“Going back to school was one of the most difficult decisions I’ve made in my life,” said Winnington. “Niagara College not only made it a positive experience, but also a huge success. The College had everything I needed to build a secure foundation for my career.”

Winnington will receive his award during the the College’s Spring Convocation Ceremony on Tuesday, June 9 at 2 p.m. Niagara College’s Spring Convocation includes seven ceremonies over three days, June 9-11.

The first medals of the Governor-General were awarded in Canada in 1873 for achievement in fields such as marksmanship, skating, cricket, and aquatics. The Earl of Dufferin, the third Governor-General after Confederation, inaugurated what has now become one of the most prestigious awards a student in a Canadian educational institution may receive – the Governor-General’s Academic Medal.

There are four levels of the award, each reflecting the highest academic standing achieved at the various levels of study: Gold at the graduate level; Silver at the undergraduate level; Collegiate Bronze at the post-secondary diploma level; and Bronze at the secondary school level.

She went on to co-create a program to bring local activist women directly into the chambers of the U.N. to address the Committee for CEDAW, a tactic that proved so successful that it has been integrated into the official proceedings of that body.

Ilana was instrumental in bringing into existence and managing UNIFEM’s Trust Fund on Violence against Women, which funds grassroots women’s groups in developing countries, working on everything from FGM to the relationship between gender-based violence and HIV/AIDS.

In just six years, the Stephen Lewis Foundation has grown to include over 20 full-time staff and 50 volunteers and funded more than 300 projects in 15 sub-Saharan African countries.

Betty Ann helped establish the region’s first housing co-operative, followed by Niagara Peninsula Housing Inc., a housing resource group for which she serves as Executive Director. She also spearheaded a number of employment-generation initiatives for low-income women, which led to the establishment of Niagara Presents in 1999, now a community business. As Managing Director, Betty Ann also serves as Board Chair to ensure that the company keeps its social goals as well as business goals. She also drove the creation of Niagara Women’s Enterprise Centre, a charity that delivers sector-based training to under-employed or unemployed women facing many barriers to employment throughout Niagara.
