Last chance to “propose” for Wedding Bells

Sep 30, 2009

The deadline for couples to offer “proposals” for this year’s Wedding Bells project is just around the corner.

Wedding Bells is a unique project through which one lucky couple will have a dream wedding, planned by Niagara College Event Management post-graduate students.

After successfully coordinating two weddings in 2009, students will again take on the stress and time requirements of wedding planning for a lucky Niagara couple for 2009/10. This project is part of the practical component of Niagara College’s Event Management post graduate Program.

Couples will delegate tasks related to the wedding day, which must take place between February and early April 2010. Eligible couples must work with a planning committee on key decisions, responsibilities and standards. Students will work within any budget amount provided by the couple. In addition to the wedding, students will also take on the responsibility of planning one ancillary activity (e.g., rehearsal dinner, wedding shower, etc.) to be agreed on between the selected couple and the wedding planning committee.

The deadline for applications is Wednesday, October 7, at 4 p.m. For further information and application forms, visit www.niagaracollege.ca/weddingbells.

Event Management is a one-year Post-Graduate program that prepares students for careers in the planning, promotion and execution of special events in the public, corporate and non-profit sectors. As part of the program, students organize a number of events, including Wedding Bells and the Many Hands project.

Niagara College and Welland Fire Services host presentation of ‘KNOW FIRE’ to educate post-secondary students on fire safety and prevention

Sep 30, 2009

Niagara College has partnered with Brock University and the Region’s local Fire Departments to produce KNOW FIRE, a fire safety and prevention program featuring a series of unique Fire Safety Videos aimed at educating college and university students living on and off campus.

The video launch will be held Monday, October 5, 2009, during an event from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Niagara College’s Welland Campus.  October 4-10, 2009, marks the annual Fire Prevention Week.

The idea was generated as a result of a Fall 2008 fire during which a group of Brock University students living off campus narrowly escaped.  A working smoke detector saved their lives.

Since that fire, two significant fires occurred at Ontario universities – one at McMaster University in Hamilton that caused massive damage and the semi-permanent evacuation of an entire student residence, and another at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo that also caused significant damage and resulted in the death of one student.  This past summer, a group of Niagara College and Brock students living together in an off campus apartment escaped a serious fire that left them homeless.

KNOW FIRE is a made-in-Niagara fire safety and prevention program designed to educate students using multi-media in a format that resonates more effectively with the 18-24 year old student demographic.  The primary format is a series of six 1-2 minute dramatic high quality videos, accompanied by a website, print materials and workshops.

Many Hands application deadline Oct. 1 – Last chance for non-profits to apply for one-day renovation blitz

Sep 25, 2009

The deadline for non-profit agencies to apply for this year’s Many Hands project is fast approaching. Applications for the student-led one-day renovation blitz will be accepted until Oct. 1.

Last year’s project resulted in a very successful renovation of the Welland Hope Centre’s Sprouting Hope Community Garden, with the help of over 80 volunteers from our community. The Centre provides a full continuum of services and support to individuals and families struggling with poverty-related issues. The restoration included an expansion of the garden to provide additional plots, an installation of a fence to deter vandals, a shed to store tools, water barrels to collect rainwater and more.

As in years past, students will plan all aspects of the project, which will take place in April, 2010.  The lead, and founding, sponsor of the Many Hands Project is Canadian Tire Financial Services.

Eligible agencies must be a not-for-profit organization involved in the provision of a community-based service in the Niagara Region and be willing to commit agency resources to the project. Selection of the project will be determined through the Many Hands Project Advisory Committee.

Currently in its thirteenth year, Many Hands is a one-day community-driven project organized by Niagara College’s Event Management program students as part of their program, in conjunction with the Construction program students. Students assist a not-for-profit organization by enhancing, improving and renovating the facility at no cost to the organization.

For more information on the Many Hands Project, visit www.niagaracollege.ca/manyhands or contact Shelley Merlo at 905-641-2252 ext 4233 or smerlo@niagaracollege.ca.

Niagara College takes on a distinct new look

Sep 8, 2009

As the campuses of Niagara College welcome thousands of new and returning students and construction continues on the unprecedented $90 million campus redevelopment plan, the College has also taken on a distinct new look with the launch of new branding. Today, Niagara College introduced a new logo and wordmark, which includes a circle “nc” icon, a supporting logo with the phrase “my nc”, and the incorporation of new colours and typefaces in College materials.

Niagara College has also adapted a new tagline: “Applied Dreams.”, which reflects the College’s vision of “Enriching lives and fulfilling dreams,” and its mission of “Providing outstanding applied education and training for a changing world.”

“While the most visible aspect of this process is a new logo and wordmark, our branding runs much deeper,” said Niagara College President Dan Patterson. “Our new brand is the authentic visual representation of who we are as an organization. It tells our story – who we are, what we offer, where we came from, and where we plan to go. And you’ll see a new tagline – two powerful words that when combined, truly personify what this college stands for – the success of our students and the dreams that they have for the future.”

“We have an unwavering commitment to student success, a successful record of student satisfaction, and exceptional faculty and staff. Thousands of our graduates are making their mark in all areas of our society, all over the world,” added Sean Kennedy, Vice-President, Student and Community Relations, “We are connected to our community, and we play a key role in the prosperity and economic development of Niagara. We offer unique programs, innovative learning enterprises and services, and our new brand captures these characteristics.”

The new branding also reaches back and brings Niagara College’s history forward.

“You’ll see that we’ve kept “Canada” in the name. “Canada” adds gravitas and a sense of place when combined with “Niagara”, it is at the same time regional, national, and international”, said Gord Hunchak, Niagara College’s Director of Marketing. “You’ll also see the colour blue, refreshed and re-energized to reflect the College’s momentum.”

The re-branding is a result of a comprehensive process that included extensive research and consultation, including interviews with students, staff and other stakeholders. The move to a new look will take a phased approach – beginning with a newly-designed Niagara College web site that went live the morning of Sept. 8: www.NiagaraCollege.ca.

With 8,000 full-time students, Niagara College offers more than 90 diploma and advanced level programs at campuses in Welland, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Niagara Falls and St. Catharines. Areas of specialization include food and wine sciences, advanced technology, applied health and community safety, and the College is home to the globally-recognized Niagara Culinary Institute and Niagara College Teaching Winery. Enrolment up for Fall/Orientation Sept. 8-9

Sep 1, 2009

With a projected overall enrolment increase of more than six percent, Niagara College is literally bursting at the seams, with less than 100 seats available for the Fall term.

“Last year we were the fastest-growing college in Ontario, and with another healthy enrolment increase this year, we find ourselves almost at capacity,” said Niagara College President Dan Patterson. “Every year, more and more, students are choosing Niagara College as their pathway to a successful career.”

To deal with consistent growth and increased demand, Niagara College is in the midst of a $90 million campus redevelopment that will expand capacity by approximately 2,000 students. Details of the project are available online at www.niagaracollege.ca/masterplan.

Projections indicate Niagara College’s full-time postsecondary enrolment will exceed 7,300 when the Fall term starts next week. Of those, approximately 4,200 are first-year students.

Orientation activities for first-year students will be held Sept. 8-9, and will include program information sessions, Student Administrative Council (SAC) sessions and campus tours. Activities at the Welland Campus will include a Vendor Village, entertainment, grand prize giveaways and live concerts. New this year is “Park After Dark – Movie in a Blanket” on Sept. 8 at 8 p.m., a family-friendly screening of the movie “Yes Man” with Jim Carrey on the Welland Campus lawn. For details, visit www.niagaracollege.ca/orientation.

New programs launching this Fall include Civil Engineering Technician, Graphic Design-Advanced and Occupational Therapist Assistant/Physiotherapist Assistant.

While the College is near capacity for Fall 2009, many College programs offer January starts, some with an accelerated format. Visit www.NiagaraCollege.ca for details.
