Record-breaking enrolment at Niagara College for Fall 2010 term

Sep 7, 2010

A record 4,500 first-year students will start classes at Niagara College this week – an increase of more than 300 students over last year’s first-year intake.

Overall, Niagara College’s total full-time post-secondary enrolment for Fall 2010 is 8,000 students, a nine percent increase over last year. When combined with apprenticeship, English as a Second Language (ESL), and Winter term starts, this year’s full-time enrolment will top 9,000 students for the first time in Niagara College history.

Capacity has been expanded at the College through a $90 million campus redevelopment project, and through five new programs that launch this fall, including Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management; Computer Systems Technician; Digital Photography, Recreation Therapy and Welding Technician.

“Clearly, our strong reputation for student success and student satisfaction, and the growing recognition of the value of a College credential in today’s rapidly changing economy is making Niagara College a school of choice for students,” said Niagara College President Dan Patterson.

Included in Niagara College’s record enrolment is a growing number of mature students who are seeking new skills in order to reintegrate into the workforce. The College’s international reputation is reflected in a record international enrolment of more than 800 students from 60 different countries.

“With our campuses transformed through our largest-ever capital expansion, and record enrolments, this is the most exciting time in our College’s history,” said Patterson.

New and returning students will find new facilities at both campuses, including five new buildings at the Welland Campus, and two at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus. At Welland, a new academic wing, Athletic Centre, Student Centre, Learning Commons and technology expansion will open over the first few weeks of the Fall term, and at Niagara-on-the-Lake, an expanded Niagara Culinary Institute and a new Teaching Brewery will also open at the start of term.

Staff, visitors, and new and returning students are reminded of parking and access changes at the Welland Campus due to construction. Additional information is available online at NiagaraCollege.ca.
