Construction update: Welland Campus

Sep 24, 2010

Progress continues to be made in major projects at the Welland Campus, and key facilities will open to students and staff over the next few weeks.

After experiencing equipment and installation delays, The Core student centre will be fully operational as of Monday, September 27, with food and beverage service on the main floor.

Classes will start in the new gymnasium as of Monday, September 27. On Wednesday, September 29, the gymnasium will play host to the first-ever meeting between the Niagara College Knights and Brock University Badgers men’s basketball teams, with the proceeds benefiting the United Way of South Niagara. Delays have been experienced in the final stages of construction of the Library and Learning Commons due to material shortages and delays in millwork. Both problems have been resolved, and crews are working full-out, seven-days-a week to complete both projects as soon as possible. The Learning Commons is now scheduled to open in early October, and the Library is expected to open shortly thereafter.

In the meantime, Welland Campus Library staff are now located in the glassed-in area across from Welland Campus Security – the site of the future Quiet Study Room in the Library. Students can visit Library staff in this temporary location, or call extension 7767, for help with research or to borrow laptops/netbooks and audio-visual equipment. Access to computer workstations continues to be in the Open Access lab.

When required, overflow parking is now available for the Welland Campus at the Rice Road Community Church, directly across from the Rice Road entrance.

Over the start of the Fall term, the College is opening the majority of projects in what is the largest capital expansion in Niagara College history – a project that will create more than 200,000 square feet of new facilities. It is a project that includes new state-of-the-art learning environments, student gathering spaces, and incorporates new technologies. As with any project of this size there have been unavoidable delays and minor inconveniences along the way, and the ongoing patience, understanding and cooperation of staff, faculty and students has been key to the success of this project. We thank all staff and students for their continued patience and understanding as the final pieces of this exciting project are put in place.
